SNOWBOARDING TAHOE CALIFORNIA
Snowboarding – Where is best snow (powder) to be found in March? California or Utah?

Looking to take a short vacation in the snow. Can either do California (Tahoe, Mammoth or Big Bear) or could go to Utah (Park City)… husband wants to snowboard for the first time, 3 yr old son has never been in the snow. We’ll need rentals too. Looking for recommendations.

Park City is awesome, the Canyons is a great place to learn snow boarding. I was in Tahoe last March and it was ok until a storm rolled in and then it was awesome. For the family environment, Park City is probably a little more favorable.

SNOWBOARDING FOR NEWBIES
Snowboarding for the first time….?

Hi, my husband and I are going snowboarding for the first time in a few months, and I’d like to know what you guys recommend for newbies like us. We’re going to Steamboat Springs…which I’ve heard is a lil pricier than other places, but well.. we’re going with some friends & staying at their timeshare so can’t be too picky. What will we need as far as clothing and accessories (other than the obvious winter clothes, boots, gloves, snow pants, jacket)? Like what kind of snow pants would be best, what kind of jacket and so forth? As far as the boots, do we need a different set of boots to snowboard or will regular snow boots work just as well? This all may be common sense to some of you, but like I said, this is our first time so I want to make sure we’re as prepared as possible. Thanks.

You need special snowboard boots, but you will be able to rent those at the same place you will rent your board.
There is a whole market full of special snowboarding pants and snowboarding jackets, but if you have a regular winter jacket that is waterproof it should be good enough for your first time boarding. The only thing that really sets snowboard jackets apart are powder skirts that keep snow out during falls. You will definitely need a waterproof/resistant pair of pants too, as you will be falling down a lot and sitting in the snow to strap into your board. They don’t have to be snowboarding pants though, they can be ski/snow pants.
2 other things you might think about are goggles and a face mask or bandanna. If its gonna be cold you are really going to want those to keep windburn off your face, goggles also help because it can get sunny and the snow is great at reflecting light up at you.

So make sure your clothes are water resistant to a good degree, if you don’t have anything dogfunk.com and sierrasnowboard.com are some good internet sites for clothing and gear.

SNOWBOARDING LESSONS CALIFORNIA
where can I go to find snowboarding rentals and lessons in california?

My friends and I are planning to go in feb. No one has done it before
southern california area.

Where ever you go there is always a ski shop at the resort or near by. You can always rent your equipment there. Far as lessons go, you can usually book a group or private or even semi-private lessons at the ski resorts. But they start at certain times so check online or call the resort for 411.
Oh by the way if you want to rent better equipment they have a thing called “DEMO’s” a bit more expensive but usually a newer model. But the most important thing is the boot fit.
Have fun be safe.
