SKI AND SNOWBOARDING TERMS
Any tips for first time skiing?

I won a few free passes to Granite Gorge, but I’m sick of having to spend hours lacing and re-lacing snowboarding boots. So I’m trying skiing. I’m going to try to take a lesson (but I’m not going to spend thousands of dollars on it, so I’m taking a 1 hour group lesson-which is still expensive on my terms) I’ve been snowboarding so I have all my gear and know what to wear and bring and eat. I want some tips on actually skiing.
I need to eat a lot because I snowboard all day usually.

The instructor giving the lesson will give you tips and show you what to do. That’s what the lesson is for. Learning skiing will be like learning snowboarding, the same things apply: keep practicing your skills and stay on terrain you can handle, especially at first. You should pick it up pretty quickly if you already know how to snowboard. Have fun!

SNOWBOARDING HELMET COVERS

SNOWBOARDING HELMET COVERS
How bad is it having a small gap between snowboarding helmet and goggles?

I have tried on so many pairs of goggles and found one which actually fits me perfectly, however they are quite small so there is about 0.5-1inch gap between the top of my goggles and my helmet.

I can find goggles that will cover the whole forehead but won’t fit me properly around the cheek bones. How important is it that my goggles cover the whole forehead? Will i need to compromise snug fitting goggles and helmet to get rid of the gap?

Thanks!

Meh it’s one of the things that gapers refers to is the gap between the helmet and goggles but it generally means those people with the HUGE gap that’s like a 3inch difference between the helmet and goggle, If it’s just a little gap I wouldn’t worry about it. You’re not going to sacrifice warmth or anything. Not worth buying more goggles or a different helmet over.

SNOWBOARDING INFORMATION
Skiing and snowboarding popularity….?

What age range is skiing most popular with? Why?
What age range is snowboarding most popular with? Why?
Between skiing and snowboarding, which is more popular overall?

You don’t have to answer all the questions. Any information about the popularity of skiing and snowboarding is helpful. If you wanna just give me a link to a website, that’s fine too.

THANK YOU!!

There is no set age range when it comes to skiing’s popularity. Skiers range in ages from 3-80+. I would say you find less snowboarders under age 6 and over age 35. Between 6-35 you can find an almost equal distribution of skiers and snowboarders at most mountains, however since 2005 snowboard sales have plateaued while ski sales have shown a slight increase.

It was quite common for young people to learn how to ski first and then transition to snowboarding, but now many snowboarders are moving to park and free-skiing. It is becoming increasingly more common to find younger people skip the snowboarding portion all together. However there are still a large number of people who try snowboarding right off the bat having never skied. Essentially there are just as many new snowboarders each year as snowboarders who quit riding.

A lot of teens take up either sport simply to fit in or to be social and then stop skiing or riding in college or shortly thereafter. 20-30 somethings (unless extremely devoted to snowsports) normally don’t ski as much as teens and college kids. However it is quite common, to see 35-40 somethings skiing on planks 15 or so years old trying to teach their toddlers how to ski. I see this all the time.

The average age of snowboarders also is increasing every year due to the fact that riders over 25 who have been riding more than 10 years are most likely not going to switch disciplines. I have friends who are in their late 30s and have been snowboarders since the early 90s. I doubt they are going to buy twin-tips and hit the park.

While there has been an increase in splitboard use in the past 5 years, Alpine Touring and Telemark ski sales have jumped and many backcountry snowboarders are switching to skis because of the better touring applications. So there is another chip in the snowboarding market. The greatest age bracket making this switch is the 20-30 age demographic. Most alpine skiers over age 30 are also not going to switch to Telemark or AT skis. I’ve been trying to convert people for the last five years and I’ve never had a successful conversion on anyone over 30, but baptised a bunch of new Telemarkers who were 18-29.

SNOWBOARDING JAPAN TOKYO
Japan in January, what to do in Tokyo and Hokkaido?

I’m not really planning on snowboarding/skiing etc., and it will be my first time in Japan so I want to make the most of it. I think I’ll mainly be traveling in Tokyo and Hokkaido, and I was wondering what the best things to do are (especially in the span of 1-2 weeks).

Well, im actually half Japanese and i have been there many times. It really depends on what you like to eat and do. The stores and places are very close together there so you can take walks, etc…I know you said Tokyo or Hokkaido, but Kyoto is also amazing. I went there by a bullet train -which was very comfortable. Anyways, you can go to the Tokyo Tower which is also amazing. If you like roller coasters, you can go to Joypolis. It is very fun and has many rides(it is an inside amusement park). They also have awesome department stores that carry many beautiful things.
I hope that helps!
