Help Me Plan A Snowboarding Trip!?
hey i plan to go snowboarding with my friend either this friday or saturday. i live in the bay area of california. i plan to go snowboarding for just one day so no lodging.
i want to go somewhere that is relatively cheap or has decent pricing for lift tickets and rentals. i dont want the place to be too crowded and i want it to have good terrain parks for beginners (boxes, small ramps/jumps, etc.)
these are the places i have in mind: alpine meadows, boreal, kirkwood, northstar, sierra, squaw valley, and sugar bowl.
also i heard it is better to rent locally, is this true?
thanks a lot!
Nowadays, you can find adequate beginner terrain features at any of the resorts you listed.
Alpine Meadows is my favorite of those resorts (though I haven’t been to Kirkwood) because it has a great mountain but it’s not as pretentious as Northstar and not as intimidating as Squaw. They also have a small but nice beginner terrain park right by the base lodge.
Boreal is good if you want only parks, as their whole mountain is basically a terrain park, but there aren’t as many runs. They are cheaper than the larger resorts (squaw, northstar, alpine, sugarbowl) and closer to the Bay Area than the other north shore resorts.
Sugar Bowl is the closest north shore resort to the Bay Area, it is very big and nice.
I also recommend Homewood, located on the west shore about 5 miles south of Tahoe City. It is medium-sized, but cheaper than any of the big resorts. I went there two weeks ago and was very impressed.
You can find detailed information about these resorts by looking at their web pages- trail maps will show you terrain parks and also tell you ticket and rental prices. It can also be helpful to note the ages for youth or student discounts, and they vary resort to resort and can be significant. Have fun!
