Winter Sports for Everyone in Boyne Michigan

Winter sports enthusiasts are overjoyed when the Winter Solstice comes and brings with it think blankets of snow.  There is a chill in the air and you can see your breath when you head outside to have fun in the snow.  Mountain Run in Boyne, Michigan has all the winter sports you could ever wish for on a winter vacation.  So throw on your coat and get all bundled up to explore this wintry paradise and embrace the cold and the snow and all the fun that it offers. 

Boyne Mountain is the Midwest’s largest ski area and this means that it is brimming with life during the wintertime.  If downhill skiing is one of your favorite winter sports then you are in luck as this area offers 14 different lifts and more than 50 trails encompassing all skill levels.  If you cannot wait to hit the slopes then head out early for a Milk Run, or the first run of the day.  For those just beginning to ski we recommend the bunny hill to get used to this exciting winter sport.  Those more advanced skiers should try out the Super Bowl, an exhilarating black-diamond run.  If you are looking for a bit less intense activity then try cross-country skiing.  This is a great full body workout and it allows you to take in the beautiful surroundings at the same time.  Boyne Mountain has 24 miles of trails for cross-country skiing and they even have 3 miles of trails for those looking to try out snowshoeing. 

Not only is Boyne Mountain great for skiing the area offers a host of other great winter sports as well.  Snow tubing is a very popular sport in the wintertime.  You can rent tubes right at Mountain Run at Boyne and they even have handle tows to bring your tube back to the top for you.  Snow tubing is great for everyone and it does not require any lessons or practicing to do it just hop on a tube and have some fun.  There is no right or wrong way to do it, so let your feet lead the way or hop on head first.  Any way that you chose to ride you are sure to have fun flying down the hill and gliding over the snow.  If you are looking for something a little more thrill seeking then head to the Terrain Park and jump and glide around on a snowboard.  The younger generation has really taken a liking to this extreme winter sport so for that adventure seeker this is the perfect activity.  

If you are looking for more family friendly activities then head to the nearest frozen lake and try some ice skating.  Whether you are just beginning or can land a triple toe loop this is one of the winter sports that everyone can enjoy.  If you are looking to play in the snow work together to build a cheerful snowman or spend some time enjoying a rousing old fashioned snowball fight.

Great Snowboarding Destinations in Colorado

The life of a snowboarder can be hard. While boarding is becoming much more popular in the US, boarders still don’t get a lot of love from skiers. That’s why it’s important to be aware of the best places to snowboard. If you know the best places, you’ll not only be able to find the best slopes and terrain parks for boarding, you’ll also be able to find a place great atmosphere where you’re not the only one who enjoys snowboarding. There are many places where you can have a great time boarding, but two of the best are in Colorado. They boast not only great runs, but great atmosphere as well.

If you’re looking for a great place to snowboard, the first place you want to check out is Breckenridge. They’ve got 146 runs with a good mix of beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert levels. If you’re less about going down the mountain and more about doing tricks, they also have three terrain parks. One of the terrain parks, Freeway Superpark, hosts several competitions every year and is widely considered the best terrain park in Colorado and even North America. If you’re not quite ready for that kind of park yet, they also have a terrain park built specifically for beginners to learn their moves. And if you get bored of the mountains at Breckenridge, you can catch a free shuttle over to neighboring Keystone for some night skiing and snowboarding (and the tickets are interchangeable). If this isn’t enough for you, the town has a great atmosphere as well. The resort area is the largest historic district in the state of Colorado. It boasts tons of shops, a variety of great restaurants, oxygen bars, and you can take free shuttles from town to each peak. If you’re into the night-life, Breckenridge has several clubs and bars to suit all the late-night partiers. If you’re with people who are into something besides going down the mountain, there is also snowmobiling, ice skating, dog sled tours, hiking trails, and a whole lot more. If you’re looking for a great all-around resort, Breckenridge is the place to go.

If you’re just learning to snowboard, Vail is a great resort to check out. Besides the fact that Vail is widely considered to be the best ski resort in the US (and the biggest), it’s also got great accommodations for those who are just starting out; including a school with over 800 instructors (including those fluent in different languages) and tons of beginner runs. This way you won’t get by doing the same thing over and over while you’re learning. They also boast one of the largest terrain parks for those looking to work on their tricks. Vail is also not a bad place to go for those of you who are a little more experienced on the slopes. They have so many different runs of all levels; snowboards of all levels of experience are bound to keep busy the whole time they’re there. And when you’re taking a break from boarding, you can take one of the free shuttles into town where you can fine over 250 shops and 100 restaurants and bars. In a resort like Vail, you’re sure to never get bored.

Elizabeth Zimmerman (August 9, 1910ovember 30, 1999) was a British-born knitter known for revolutionizing the modern practice of knitting through her books and instructional series on American public television.
Though knitting back and forth on rigid straight needles was the norm, she advocated knitting in the round using flexible circular needles to produce seamless garments and to make it easier to knit intricate patterns. She also advocated the Continental knitting method, claiming that it is the most efficient and quickest way to knit. During World War II, German or continental knitting fell out of favor in the UK and US due to its association with Germany. Most English books on knitting today are in the English or American style. Elizabeth Zimmerman helped to re-introduce continental style knitting to the United States.
Early life
Born in England as Elizabeth Lloyd-Jones, she attended art schools in Switzerland and Germany. Her autobiographical “Digressions” in the book Knitting Around reprinted many of her original artworks alongside the text. Zimmermann learned to knit first from her mother and aunts (English Style) and then later from her Swiss governess (German or Continental Style).

EZ (as she is known among knitters) eventually migrated to the United States with her new husband, German brewery master Arnold Zimmermann. The Zimmermans initially settled in Wisconsin in a converted schoolhouse which would become home to Schoolhouse Press, a mail-order knitting business still based in the schoolhouse and run by her daughter Meg Swansen.
Initiatives
Zimmermann is credited with knitting the first example of an Aran sweater seen in an American magazine (Vogue Knitting). (While it may have been the first item knitted, another pattern had been published 2 years previously. EZ’s pattern was published in Vogue Knitting in 1958, while a collection of patterns for men’s and women’s Aran sweaters with matching socks and mittens, entitled “Hand Knits from the Aran Islands,” was published in a 1956 issue of Woman’s Day Magazine.)
According to her posthumously-published book The Opinionated Knitter, a yarn-company editor altered Zimmermann’s circular knitting instructions for a Fair Isle Yoke pullover after she submitted the sweater, rendering it in the back-and-forth “flat” knitting method that was more popular among American knitters at the time. This alteration led Zimmermann to begin to publish her own instructions as Wool Gatherings.
US television
Zimmermann’s PBS knitting series is still available on VHS and DVD. In one episode, a police officer (and friend of the family) pulled Zimmermann and her husband over for “knitting without a license.” (Always knitting, she’d even developed the ability to knit while on the back of her husband’s motorcycle.) In The Opinionated Knitter, Zimmermann’s daughter Meg notes that while her mother wanted to call her first book The Opinionated Knitter, her publishers changed it to Knitting Without Tears. However, the former perhaps best expresses Zimmermann’s knitting philosophy. In all her published works (print and video), she encouraged knitters to experiment and develop their own patterns.

Her “EPS” (Elizabeth’s Percentage System) is still widely used by designers: it consists of a mathematical formula to determine how many stitches to cast on for a sweater, given that the sleeves and body are usually proportionate no matter what yarn or gauge is used. Other patterns and techniques for which she is well known are the so-called “Pi Shawl,” a circular shawl that Zimmermann claimed was formed by regularly spaced increases based on Pi — as she said in her book Knitter’s Almanac, “the geometry of the circle hing[es] on the mysterious relationship of the circumference of a circle to its radius. A circle will double its circumference in infinitely themselves-doubling distances, or, in knitters’ terms, the distance between the increase-rounds, in which you double the number of stitches, goes 3, 6, 12, 24 and so on.” The shawl is not, however, based on Pi in any special way, but only on the property common to all two-dimensional shapes in Euclidean geometry that all dimensions increase by the same factor at the same rate; the circular shape is simply created by regularly spacing the increases). Zimmermann is also known for the “i-cord” (or “idiot cord”), and the “Baby Surprise Jacket,” which is knitted completely flat and then folded, origami-style, to create a shaped jacket.

Snowboarding Size Question?

I am 5′8″ and I am seriously considering getting a Burton Deuce, but I’m not exactly sure if I want to get the 155 or the 159. I weigh about 180 pounds and am a beginner. I know the 159 is between my chin and nose in length, but a lot of people say that that really doesn’t matter. I also hear that shorter boards are better for starters. I’m not doing to be doing any tricks or anything, just for riding down the mountain. Any suggestions??
