I’ve been snowboarding twice in Tahoe now and I didn’t have to pay for my lessons either time. I also know that when I had looked online at the ski resorts I went to (I forget which ones; I think one of them was Kirkwood) they didn’t mention that FREE lessons were available.
Is it safe to assume that most other ski resorts will have free lessons as well? I’m going to Heavenly with some first-timers, and lessons cost $100+ online. What’s the point in paying when there are free lessons?
My guess is that those “free” lessons were bundled with a lift pass, and you paid for the package.
Some (very few) resorts offer a free lesson for the first day. In most places you pay for lessons.

Some people are not sure whether or not they’re going to like snowboarding, so they lease some gear, purchase a lift ticket and all alone try and ride down the mountain. While this strategy might be the least expensive way to test out if they’re going to love it or not, they really aren’t giving themselves a fair shot at enjoying this great sport.
So you are left with a hundred questions and have to decide whether it’s worth it to hire an instructor again.
Not to go into too much detail about the benefits but pre-practicing programs your body and mind for snowboarding. When you hit the pistes for the first time it will seem to be you can already snowboard.
You want to give yourself a fair shot at enjoying it. Pre-practicing can make learning to snowboard simpler and more fun. Also leasing gear is a good way to test the sport out without spending too much money, but often times rental hardware isn’t always in the best condition or not the perfect size for you. Reading a snowboarding buying guide will help you learn what to have a look for when shopping for your perfect gear. Good Luck and Have Fun!
