I am going to break down a first time lesson here so you know what to expect for that first day on the slopes.

So you made it to the mountain, picked up some gear from rentals and shuffled your way through the ticket line. And it’s finally time for your lesson. When you make it to the lesson area, just tells anybody in uniform’first timer’ and they’ll look after you.

All right lesson time. Make sure those boots are done up nice and tight. The first thing your instructor will show you is how the bindings and board work and the way to strap yourself in. Next is the easiest way to stand on a snowboard. The basic position is your action-ready position and the position you will make all your movements from.

Don’t forget to keep your full body above the board.
This can feel unusual at first but with a few tries it will become easy. You will only have one foot strapped in at that point so you may use your other foot to slow yourself down or regain balance if you slip.

To turn a snowboard all you’ve got to do is put some weight on an edge. Push your front toe down to turn towards your toes or push your heel down to turn towards your heels. Sound straightforward right? It might take a few makes an attempt to get it down but this is where the fun starts. It’s time to learn the way to stop. It’s also time to strap your other foot in.

The primary way is to fly down the hill with your arms flailing around and kicking the board about till you explode in a mess of snow, gloves and goggles. Not so fun right? The other way ( the sensible way ) is to turn your board across the hill and gently dig the uphill edge into the snow. This exercise is called a side-slip.
Remember your basic stance? It’s actually crucial to have your weight on both feet and the board across the hill otherwise you will not stop and keep sliding.

Tip : If making an attempt to stop on your heel edge don’t let your toes touch the snow as this may positively cause you to trip over. The same is applicable to the Toe edge. Nice work. Good job. The following step is riding the lift. Lift riding can be intimidating initially but is essentially quite simple. As the chair comes thru just simply sit down. Right, safety bar down and experience the view. You can laugh at all the people trying to get down the hill doing exactly what you just did. When you get to the top get your board straight, stand up straight and glide down the ramp like the first thing you learnt.

The next step for you will be linked turns, developing your balance and control then maybe a harder slope.

Ski Holidays Chamonix

What is it about Chamonix that makes it one of the most popular winter sports destinations in the world? The answer is simple. Mountains. Very big mountains.

Chamonix is a French alpine town nestled in a valley below the mighty Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe. The mountains surrounding Mont Blanc are extremely impressive, and indeed imposing, with many peaks over 4000 m, and huge glaciers flowing down almost to the valley floor.

Chamonix was one of the first mountain tourist destinations in the world, and as a result of this tourism, the world famous “Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix” was formed in 1821.

Set against the back drop of the Mont Blanc range, Chamonix town has some beautiful buildings, some fantastic shops, and a great range of restaurants, bars and even nightclubs. There is also plenty of accommodation available, from 5 star hotels and luxury catered chalets, through to small studio apartments.

The skiing in the Chamonix valley is not for the faint hearted. The slopes are steep, and there is a lot of glaciated terrain on which high mountain guides are recommended.

One of the most famous off piste itineraries in the world – the Vallee Blanche – starts from the top of the Aguille de Midi cable car at 3842, just a km under the peak of Mont Blanc. From there, after enjoying the views from the restaurant at the top, skiers and boarders walk down a knee wobbling “snow arrete” – a thin icy path with Chamonix on one side (nearly 3000 m down) and yawning crevasses on the other side, 1000 m down.

Once this scary walk has been completed, you can clip into your skis, and embark on a fantastic 25 km off piste run, surrounded by majestic peaks, ice falls and massive crevasses. The skiing can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be – the main route down is no more difficult than a easy blue run, whereas some of the more difficult routes have pitches of 45-50 degrees.

Even on the easy route, it is highly recommended that groups hire a guide. Although the skiing may not be too taxing, there is an ever present and real danger of crevasses, and if someone in the group were to injure themselves, there are no ski patrols waiting to come and help.

That being said, the Vallee Blanche is a truly remarkable day out, and one that should be on the wish list of any skier or snowboarder.
