Make Your Own Winter Olympics Memories In Park City

The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics will be held Feb. 12-28, 2010 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada with some events held in the nearby resort town of Whistler.

Nearly 100 nations from around the world have qualified at least one athlete or team for participation in the 2010 games. Sports included in this Olympics include bobsled, luge, skeleton, ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating, short track speed skating, curling, alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, snowboarding, biathlon, cross country skiing, ski jumping and the nordic combined event.

While the world watches the events in Vancouver, the snow will also be falling at the site of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. www.vancouver2010.com

Salt Lake City and nearby Park City, Utah hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics and winter sports buffs can still enjoy the thrills associated with those Games.

Skiers and snowboarders in particular will appreciate the benefits of staying at Westgate Park City Resort where they can find “the greatest snow on earth” as well as convenient ski in and out accommodations.

For those who wish to unwind after a day on the slopes, Westgate Park City also offers Serenity Spa by Westgate, featuring a full menu of spa services, including massage, manicures, facials, body treatments and more.

One of Utah’s premiere mountain resort properties, Westgate Park City offers beautiful accommodations ranging from cozy guestrooms to spacious two-bedroom suites with fully equipped kitchens, whirlpool tubs and fireplaces. Onsite amenities include ski valet service, Westgate Grill, Pizza Hut Express, indoor/outdoor pool, hot tubs, fitness center, tennis and basketball courts, bicycle rentals, game room, pool tables and playground.  For information on discount accommodations packages, visit www.westgatereservations.com today.

Other reminders of the 2002 Winter Olympics are also visible throughout the Park City area. The Utah Olympic Oval was built to host speed skating competitions during the 2002 Games, but now serves as a legacy to the State of Utah for all to enjoy.

At the Utah Olympic Park you can watch or participate in Olympic-style events. The park hosts national and international competitions and training events including nordic jumping and the excitement of sliding sports like bobsled, luge and skeleton.

During the summer, ski jumpers work on technique by landing on plastic runways in landing zones. Freestyle aerialists practice their twists and jumps and land in the park’s 750,000-gallon training pool.

Today, visitors are treated to self-guided and expert tours of the competition sites, including the world’s highest altitude ski jumps and the fastest sliding track. Or you can even take the ride of your life on a bobsled at 70 miles per hour, experiencing the full effect of 4 Gs of force. You can also try an introductory camp in ski jumping, luge, skeleton or slopestyle skiing and snowboarding. Or simply visit the Alf Engen Ski Museum and 2002 Games exhibit.

Snowboarding: All the Latest

If you are a snowboarder or are at all familiar with the sport, then you know the name Louie Vito. He’s a professional U.S. snowboarder who, according to all accounts, will make the 2010 U.S. Olympic team. However, it’s not his notoriety to possible Olympic glory where he may inadvertently help to bring snowboarding into the mainstream – it’s his appearance on the popular ABC reality television show Dancing with the Stars.

Dancing with the Stars is based on the British Television series called Strictly Come Dancing and according to Television Business International, in both 2006 and 2007, it was the most popular television show around the world reaching the top ten in 17 countries. Today, the U.S. version enjoys an average weekly audience of close to 14 million viewers. That is nothing but good news for the snowboarding industry, as viewers truly interested in Vito, will likely follow his career long after his feet have danced their last Tango.

If you’re not lucky enough to live in a place that affords you the luxury of either participating in winter sports and/or watching them, if you’re a half pipe slayer at heart you can either rent or buy some of the very popular snowboarding movies instead. Some titles include: Snowboardings Holy Grail, The Struggle, Apples and Oranges, Knockout “the tenth round”, Breaking Ground, and In Transit, to name just a few. All of these films can be found on ameibo.com. Films in this genre are both entertaining and instructional – just take your pick. The 2009 snowboard movie Elektro is now out and going on tour. Check out the premier dates at http://www.ameibo.com/movie-blog/ for all the latest.

Still can’t get enough with all the available snowboarding movies out there? Look no further than 2010 where the winter Olympics will be held in Vancouver, Canada. Snowboarding is already being touted as the one to watch at these games. While snowboarding only became an official Olympic event in 1998, over the last ten years, it has become one of the most popular sports to watch. With insane tricks and incredible fly through the air twists, turns, and jumps, even a hard-core adrenalin junkie will get a thrill watching these super-duper athletes.

Snowboarding has many different events some of which are not all official. A typical competition will offer the following (those in brackets are the only official events at the 2010 games):

-Slope Style

-Big Air

-Half-pipe (Vancouver 2010 official event, Men’s & Women’s)

-Snowboard Cross (Vancouver 2010 official event, Men’s & Women’s)

-Indycross

-Rail Jam

-Racing

-Parallel Giant Slalom (Vancouver 2010 official event, Men’s & Women’s)

In Vancouver, all snowboarding events will take place at the venue located on Cypress Mountain. 8000 people will be lucky enough to get an up close and personal view of this spectacular venue built especially for snowboarding. For those that won’t fit into the 8000 capacity location, they can watch it on television like the rest of the world-wide audience. If you’re not one of the lucky ones going to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, what about checking out a snowboarding event near you, if such a place exists? There are any number of events going on around the world including:

  • British Snow Tour International Championships – October 21 – 25, 2009.

This is not only the centerpiece of the UK winter sports season, but it is also the “largest consumer sports show in Europe”.

  • UK Snow Film Festival – November 26 – 27, 2009

  • Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour: Billabong Air&Style Innsbruck-Tirol 2010 – December 3 – 5, 2009

  • Dew Tour Winter: Breckenridge – December 18 – December 20, 2009

First two stops of the tour will take place in the Colorado Rockies and the next two stops will take place in the new year.

  • Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour: Champs Open – December 28, 2009 – January 1, 2010

  • Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour: The Oakley Arctic Challenge – December 27, 2009 – January 3, 2010

So go on and get out there and get your ‘Louis Vito on’! Rent or buy a movie, head to the Olympics, watch the Olympics on television, or hang out at one of the many exciting snowboarding events being offered in the 2009-2010 season. This is far from the end – snowboarding events will continue well into April 2010, so you have plenty of time to decide what and where you want to do. And remember, snowboarding can be seen all year ’round on both your computer and your television – there is always a way to stay close to the action!

SNOWBOARDING VACATIONS CANADA
Where can I snowboard in September/October in the USA or Canada?

I live in Pennsylvania and it’s like 90 degress. Snowboarding is my favorite thing to do and I get a vacation as a college graduation gift. The only time i can make the trip would be later september-early october. Does anyone know what mountains or ski areas have snow and are open that time of the year in the USA or prefably Canada? I looked but it looks like everything is closed..

Last year the COLORADO’S ARAPAHOE BASIN opened it’s ski season on Oct. 10th, the earliest in North America. It was the second consecutive year that they had the earliest opening. They probably have the best shot.

2010 OLYMPIC SNOWBOARDING EVENTS
How can I buy tickets for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics?

I want to buy tickets in the snowboarding events. If you have any idea pleaseee let me know :)

What is available from where differs depending on where you live. According to the official Vancouver 2010 website, there are different outlets to buy tickets from depending on your country of origin. For instance, US citizens are not allowed to buy tickets from the official Canadian distributor. That official website has a list of what vendors or websites offer tickets to their citizens.

For instance, just a simple check on my official distributor’s website showed Snowboarding tickets as still available. Prices for one Snowboarding event ticket, a ticket to another event of your choice, admission to the Victory Ceremony and a Hospitality Pass ranged anywhere between $1202-$1523. Check your official distributor, as listed on the Vancouver website, and see what you can find.

SNOWBOARDING OLYMPICS GOLD 2006

Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games

Vancouver hosts the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. After a four-year wait, hundreds of competitors from across the world battle it out for cherished gold medals in sports ranging from downhill skiing to ice hockey, bobsleigh and biathlon. Winter sports fans, athletes and the world’s media descend on the city for three weeks of dramatic action. The world-class resort at Whistler on Blackcomb Mountain hosts the ever-popular high-adrenalin Alpine skiing and “sliding” events such as the luge and bobsleigh. Newer sports like freestyle skiing and snowboarding take over Cypress Mountain in Cypress Provincial Park.

You don’t even need to leave the confines of the city to watch ice hockey and skating, with events at Canada Hockey Place, the UBC Thunderbird Arena and the Pacific Coliseum at Hastings Park. Away from the pistes and ice rinks, the concurrent Cultural Olympiad presents scores of concerts, new arts projects and other entertainment.

The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, will be held on February 12–28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with some events held in the resort town of Whistler and in Richmond, a Vancouver suburb. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games are being organized by the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC). The 2010 Winter Olympics will be the third Olympics hosted by Canada, and the first by the province of British Columbia. Previously, Canada was home to the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta.

Following Olympic tradition, then Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The flag was raised on February 28, 2006, in a special ceremony, and will be on display at Vancouver City Hall until the Olympic opening ceremony. The event will be officially opened by Governor General Michaëlle Jean.

Some venues, including the Richmond Olympic Oval, are at sea level, a rarity for the Winter Games. The 2010 Games will also be the first-Winter or Summer-to have an Opening Ceremony held indoors. Vancouver, which will be the most populous city ever to hold the Winter Games, will also be the warmest: in February, when the Games will be held, Vancouver has an average temperature of 4.8 °C (40.6 °F).

The opening and closing ceremonies will be held at BC Place Stadium, which received over $150 million in major renovations. Competition venues in Greater Vancouver include the Pacific Coliseum, the Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre, the UBC Winter Sports Centre, the Richmond Olympic Oval and Cypress Mountain. GM Place will play host to ice hockey events, but because corporate sponsorship is not allowed for an Olympic venue, it will be renamed Canada Hockey Place for the duration of the games. Renovations include the removal of advertising from the ice surface and conversion of some seating to accommodate the media. Competition venues in Whistler include the Whistler Blackcomb ski resort, the Whistler Olympic Park and the Whistler Sliding Centre.

The 2010 Winter Olympics will mark the first time since the National Hockey League (NHL) allowed its players to compete in Olympic Games (in 1998) that Olympics will be held in an NHL market. To avoid conflict between player commitments to their Olympic hockey squads and their NHL teams, the league will not hold games during the 2010 Olympic Games, and the season schedule has been compressed. In addition, Vancouver’s NHL team, the Canucks, will be displaced from Canada Hockey Place, their home arena. As a result, the Canucks will be faced with the longest road trip in NHL history, with 14 games over 6 weeks, from January 27 to March 13, 2010.
