Breckenridge is actually a Historic Colorado town, which was founded in 1859 and named after John C. Breckenridge the Vice President from Kentucky at the time. The town was originally established as a mining village to serve workers taking gold deposits found around the Blue River. Because of this rich history Breckenridge has a very unique feel to it very rustic, yet modern. An interesting fact to consider on January 1, 2010 Breck actually legalized the possession of an ounce or less of marijuana on adults in the town, however state law still prohibits its possession.
As for the resort itself it was named the 9th best ski resort in the United States by Ski Magazine in 2008. It has a base elevation of 9,600 feet and a top elevation of 12,998 feet, a respectable vertical change. 155 ski runs cover a large 2,358 skiable acres. 14% of the runs are considered beginner, 31% are intermediate, 19% advanced and 36% expert. So expect skiing for all types and levels of experience. The four O’Clock run the longest at 3.5 miles. There are 25 acres for terrain parks to keep any snowboarders in your group satisfied. And don’t forget the all-important snow, Breckenridge gets around 300 inches a year. All these runs and terrain are accessible by 30 state of the art ski lifts, one cozy gondola, 2 high speed 6 passenger super chairs, 7 high speed quad chairs, 1 triple chair, 6 double chairs, and 13 surface chairs.
Breckenridge is also within driving distance from Arapahoe Basin and Keystone resorts, giving you a wide variety of choices when you stay at the town. If you fly into Denver International airport expect about a 2 hour drive up the I-70 to reach your destination.
Last but not least remember to have fun and enjoy yourself. Skiing is probably the best way to spend your hard earned vacation time.
