SNOWBOARDING FOR THE FIRST TIME

I went Snowboarding for the first time and I had so much trouble standing is that normal?
Basically I went snowboarding and couldn’t stand up for the life of me. It was weird, I felt as if I had no strength in my legs. My friend was telling me just stand up like you normally would but I just couldn’t do it. It took so much strength and energy out of me to stand up. I never noticed how I usually put one foot forward (not possible while strapped into a snowboard) to stand up. Any pointers? Advice? What should I do?
The answers so far are correct. The easiest way to learn and the least painful way is with a snowboard instructor. Things to remember about snowboarding is that it is not naturally for your body to be moving sideways strapped together! During a lesson you learn things slowly so you are comfortable with how the board works. Start by learning to move around with your board.
The first hour should be with your back foot unstrapped. Go maybe 10 – 15 feet up a gentle slope and push off with back foot then put your back foot just in inside of the back binding. First time let your board just slide down and gently stop (on its own or do a toe/heel drag). Do that a couple times work on slowly getting your back up straight and tall with your knees bent. When you are comfortable with that then at the end of the small hill put your weight on your toes and lift your heels, this will put you into a right turn if you ride regular (left foot first). Then work on lifting your toe and putting pressure on your heel edge to turn left if you are regular.
Those are the basic few moves to learn before anything else. Do not go up the chairlift until that is easy to do since that is very close to how you get off a chair at the top. Remember take things slow and a lesson really will help.
Good luck!
