Are new versions of os x free?

i have a macbook, and im trying to install a video game (shaun white snowboarding) and it installed, but it wont let me open it because it says “you can not run this version of sws on your version of os x. how can i download the new version, is it free!!!???

Updates are free.

but upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5 are not free.
