What is a good base layer for the cold?

What is a good base layer for the cold?
I know synthetic fabrics are best for removing moisture and keeping you dry. But there are so many different kinds of synthetics out there, which one is the best? Is under armor worth the price or are there products with the same effectiveness but cheaper? I will be snowboarding in Colorado for a couple weeks this winter and I need an effective base layer.

Patagonia makes a great base layer called Capilene. It is a good lightweight base layer. REI sells some good midweight long underwear shirts and pants, take a look online. I have used their products for over ten years and they have always done me right. Usually better priced, I have found them to be just as effective and 100% guaranteed also. I have some fleece pants and a midweight microfleece type shirt from REI that have lasted through an Outward Bound mountaineering course, eight years in the Tetons climbing and skiing, two winters skiing every weekend in Colorado, and I’ll be taking them into the Winds this summer as backup layers. Just make sure you don’t skimp on the shell. It will make all the difference when that big storm hits.
