Gearing Up Snowboarding This Winter

Snowboarding, as we call it today, was originally invented in the 1960’s by a man in Michigan. The original idea was to put two skis together and attach a rope to the front to keep control. This quickly became dubbed the “snurfer” by people, since it was almost like surfing on snow. By the early 70’s Sherman Poppen, the creator of the snurfer, began to organize competitions at Michigan ski resorts.

Fast forward about 40 years later and the snurfer is now called a snowboard, which is an activity that many people participate in every winter alongside skiers (and sledders). In 1998 snowboarding was brought on as an official game of the Winter Olympics. Throughout the last 40 years there were many different kinds of gear made just for snowboarding. Let’s go over a few of the many snowboarding accessories that you’ll want to get this cold season.

A Good MP3 Player

There is nothing better than going top speed down a mountain while blaring some of your favorite music on your iPod. It’s important to have a good pair of headphones the sound around you isn’t distorting your music. Beats by Dr. DRE or Skullcandy Agents are both fine to keep the music in and the noise out. Since most MP3 players are cutting out the button controls, you may want to invest in some touch screen compatible gloves, which will do the trick for most players. Keep in mind when snowboard shopping, the new iPod touch’s screen will not work with most gloves on the market. What  music will you be playing while boarding this year?

Backpack for Storage

When you are busting threw snow the last thing you want to think about is – “Where is my toolkit” or “gosh, I’m a little hungry and I’ve only been here a half hour”. It is for this reason that you need a backpack to provide extra storage for the things you might need. Let’s face it, there is no telling when you are going to need a first aid kit. It’s much better to be safe than sorry.

A Tool Kit w/ Wax

A good tool kit contains everything you need to tune and tighten your board, and also some wax. Wax is important for snowboarders because it both improves their performance and acts as a preventative against any future damage against the board. Some of the tools that you need will only be good for your board, so if you upgrade to new bindings keep that in mind.

A Very Warm Hat

While blazing through the snow you need something to keep your ears very warm. Many people just go with a normal hat, which is not good enough because much of the cold air goes right pass the material. The best types of material is thick cotton, polar fleece or wool. Makre sure you don’t setting for a normal hat at your local store – if you are going to invest in anything for snowboarding, or as Poppen originally called it Snurfing, it should be a warm hat and some gloves to text with!

This gear will make your snowboarding time more warm and memorable. While hitting the slopes with your family you should keep a camera in your backpack, that way it can be even more memorable. Check out more about snowboarding here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowboarding_at_the_Winter_Olympics
