BACKCOUNTRY SNOWBOARDING COLORADO

snowboarding Vermont from February to spring?
Me and my family do not have the money to go skiing in Colorado or Utah this year so we were thinking somewhere closer to home like Vermont how long does there stay snow there and what would be a really good resort for some skiing/snowboarding? lots of backcountry is good.
looking for lots of blacks and double blacks i saw that smuggs has a triple but is it worth it
The blacks at Smuggs are very good but the Black Hole is rather difficult to find I was just there again and wasn’t really sure where it starts and where it crosses the liftline. The surrounding trails there are good too.
If you really want good glades and somewhat of an open border policy then head to Jay Peak. Jay’s blacks are steep and the glades rock. I’m still not sure if the BC area at Big Jay is open thanks to the a-holes who tried to cut their own illegal trail.
You can also get some good access at Sugarbush and Stowe. Killington is OK, but trying to ski or ride out-of-bounds there can lead to disaster if you miss certain landmarks. A lot of people get disoriented in that area. They think they are going northeast and actually end up going southwest. There is excellent terrain there, but either go with a local who knows the area or do a recon on foot in the summer. Sadly, some of the better terrain at Big-K are actually Blues. They tend to be more narrow and twisty. There are some good in-bounds glades too. Devil’s Woods is good if there is enough snow.
Stratton and Mt.Snow offer good terrain parks and pipes. Neither have any thing extremely steep or challenging when it comes to regular slopes. Most of the trails at both places are wide enough to land a 747. I was just at Stratton last week and the only reason I was there was because I had comps. I’d never pay to ski there. If it weren’t for the fact that we were getting an inch an hour it would have been unremarkable. The freshies were awesome. I think Mt.Snow is even more boring. Nothing but big, open runs that go straight up and down the hill. Even Okemo has more twisty and narrow trails. And with both Snow and Stratton the best BC stuff you will find is gonna mean a hump back to the top or a long, long walk out of the woods. There are a few good stashes on the sides, but the best stuff at both resorts dumps you smack dab into the National Forest and those roads are closed in winter, so you can’t leave a car someplace at the bottom. If you really want an adventure, take a full pack, and a tent. Exit the backside of Stratton, ski down to the Stratton Pond, and then pick your way back down to Arlington or Manchester..but you’ll want a splitboard or an AT or Tele set-up and skins. You might make it back before sunset…if not, set-up camp.
If you want twisty, bumpy, and largely ungroomed, hit up Magic instead. It’s usually not as crowded because all the chumps are at Stratton and Mt. Snow.
I still say Jay is your best bet.
Given the snow on the ground, most places should be open until the last weekend in March.
